"An extraordinarily versatile group of musicians that turns on a dime to craft new musical worlds from medieval and renaissance sources”

  Flemish Masters
A Celebration of Musical Genius from the Low Countries

The season begins with a return trip to the music of the Low Countries, an older, well-established locale both historically and for Piffaro. Flemish composers in the 15th and 16th centuries set the course of European music for centuries to come, creating the international musical language that the rest of Europe emulated until well into the 18th century, influencing even the likes of J. S. Bach. Stops in Antwerp, Bruges, Courtrai, Liège, Brussels and Leuven will highlight the music of native sons such as Jakob Obrecht, Josquin Desprez, Heinrich Isaac, Nicolas Gombert, Clemens non Papa, Andreas Pevernage and Jean de Castro, culminating in a rollicking romp with the dance master Tylman Susato
for a final send off to the next destination.

Es ist ein Ros
A Night of Caroling in Renaissance Bavaria

An Epiphany Vespers
Reformation Then and Now

For the holiday season our travels take us to Germany where two concerts frame the 12 days of Christmas with something old and something new. Anticipating the festive day, a night out in old Bavaria will sample the local musical “brews” that have become the beloved standards of this holiday season in Reformation German and subsequently throughout the world. Hymns, carols and motets by Martin Luther himself, together with works by his colleagues and inheritors Johann Walther, Jacob Regnart and Martin Praetorius can’t help but put the Christmas spirit into the most Scrooge-like curmudgeon, as will the glorious singing of Piffaro favorite, Laura Heimes!

The German holiday tour climaxes with the observance of an often overlooked, though equally prominent occasion, Epiphany. Our tour will witness a Vespers service in the Reformed tradition. Renowned Philadelphia composer Kile Smith has written for Piffaro and chorus new Psalms, a Magnificat and instrumental numbers based on the early hymn tunes of the German tradition for this festive day. Piffaro will be joined by the stunning vocal sound of The Crossing, a chorus of 18 singers under the direction of Philadelphia favorite, Donald Nally, a group as adept in new music as they are fluent in the music of the Renaissance. A highlight of our season-long travels, this concert will mark Piffaro’s first major commission of new music for wind band in the tradition of the professional bands of the 16th century.

A Musical Pastiche Of the Early German Baroque
Music of Praetorius, Schütz, Schein and Scheidt

Our tour stays in Germany but travels forward in time into the 17th century with stops in Wolfenbuttel, Dresden and Halle where we hear the works of Heinrich Schütz, Samuel Scheidt, Johann Herman Schein and Martin Praetorius in the new style for voices, continuo and winds. The sumptuous continuo sound of massed strings from New York’s celebrated Ensemble ARTEK will provide a richly solid foundation for the superstructure of vocal and instrumental display. This concert will be the occasion to witness aurally and visually new additions to Piffaro’s instrumentarium, including new dulcians from alto to contrabass, as well as its new collection of three 17th century German shawms by German maker Guntram Wolf of Kronach. Old and new again, providing fascinating experiences as the tour concludes.

The London Waites
English Music for Renaissance Wind Bands

The final stop of the season takes us to the storied, bustling city of London whose civic wind band vied with the band of the Royal court for the best players and music and preeminence in the musical arena during the reign of Elizabeth I. Works by Robert Parsons, Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, Thomas Weelkes and others, composers who mastered the international language created by their Flemish predecessors, ring from cathedrals, courts, pubs and city streets making this visit a fitting finale to our season’s musical tour of northern Europe. Appropriately, Piffaro will perform this concert two weeks later at the famed Tage Alter Musik festival in Regensburg, Germany. The tour continues!
